It’s such an exciting time of year! Holiday parties, travel, time off work…really zero time to be sick. As we’re running from one gathering to the next, or traveling to be with family, our bodies are thrown out of their normal routines. Unfortunately, when we are on the go, our immune system can weaken. If you’re like me, you have ZERO time for that nonsense. Stay healthy this holiday season by following these 3 easy tips to wellness while you’re on the go!
Stay Healthy Tip #1 – Stay Hydrated
Drinking enough water, plain and simple is one of the best ways to help your body. When I’m traveling, or even running errands during the day I always keep a water bottle with me. It’s easy to bring my own water bottle while traveling, its convenient and easy to refill (and saves money too as I’m less likely to pick up a drink at a gas station or rest stop). Stainless steel water bottles will keep the temp of your drink nice and cool (or hot) for the duration of your travels.
Stay Healthy Tip #2 Stay Active
It’s so easy to fall into a food coma, or use the excuse that because it’s the holiday’s your workout can wait. Sticking to your routine, and staying active will help keep your metabolism going, energy up and help your body stay on track and healthy. Not to mention, you’re likely going to be consuming extra calories around this time, so it’s important to be mindful of that and keep it moving!
There are plenty of easy ways to stay active while on the road, or during this busy time.
- Walk, walk, walk: bundle it up and go for a walk after Thanksgiving dinner. Make it a family affair and you get the bonus of extra bonding time! Or, if you’re braving the black Friday crowds, don’t circle the lot for that extra close spot…take the last row…the extra steps will do your heart good.
- At home workouts: No time to make it to the gym? That’s fine! Turn your home into your gym. Find open space and do a circuit of pushups, squats, lunges…you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to keep your body going. There are also great programs like BeachBody On Demand, where you can sign up for a membership and access the entire library of BeachBody workouts, wherever you are. You can even filter workouts by time, so if you are on a time crunch you can still get your workout in!
- Make it a family event: Around Thanksgiving and the holidays there are plenty of 5k’s or other organized community walks. Look for an event in your area and sign up as a family. Last year, my mom and I walked in a Turkey Chase 5K on Thanksgiving Day. It felt great to get up and get moving, and was so nice to visit with her in this way while i was in town. This year, my fiancé and I are running in a 4 miler (wish me luck), you better believe I’m getting an extra slice of pie for that!
Stay Healthy Tip #3 Pack a Road Trip Kit
Traveling, hugging loved ones, passing around shared dishes, stopping at rest stops – all the many ways we can pick up some extra germs this holiday season. I always like to be prepared to combat germs, and up my Vitamin C intake while I’m traveling during the holidays. I like to pack an extra bag with sanitizer, Emergen-C and other goodies to keep myself as healthy as possible.
I hope you’ve found these tips helpful, I know they’ve helped me stay healthy and on track during this busy time. If you are traveling, safe travels! Please leave a comment or share this if you’ve found this helpful. I would love to hear if you have a routine of your own that keeps you healthy during the holidays.
