5 Affordable Beauty Essentials for Every Busy Gal’s Makeup Bag

Where’s all my work week warriors? Or those mommas who work 24/7 for their littles? How about the nightshifters, or gals who are students working hard and goal-digging’?

Let’s be real, the day doesn’t end when you punch the time clock. Sometimes, the afternoon hustle is harder to get motivated for than getting out of bed! You’re so close to the end of your work day, but still have all your responsibilities at home to tend to. Or if you are a mom, your work NEVER ENDS (oh, how I admire you). Maybe you’re a student and you find yourself rushing from class to your second job, throwing chex-mix at your face for dinner, and hustling to help pay for those books (I’ve been there girl!).

If you’re a busy gal, chances are by mid day you need a little pick me up, and if you managed to put makeup on that morning, chances are said makeup may be looking a tad bit scary. I don’t know about you, but something about a fresh face just gives me the confidence and extra boost to conquer my day. The Daily Mail posted an article about the “Lipstick Study” conducted at Harvard. The study concluded that female students who wore makeup had higher self esteem, and grades. I bet you didn’t think you’d be getting some scientific research here (*wink wink*).  I’m not saying you need to put makeup on to do well or succeed, but something about feeling confident in yourself allows you to exude confidence throughout your day which will lead to your success!

Here are 5 of my favorite drugstore beauty products, for a quick midday refresh. These beauty products are also great for a busy morning when you need quick makeup to get your day started.

Micellar Cleanse Your Troubles Away

This stuff is a lifesaver in a bottle. This gentle cleanser uses micelle cleansing molecules that work like little magic magnets (say that 5x fast) to lift dirt from your skin. If you finished a lunch time workout, swab your face with a cotton ball soaked in Micellar Cleansing Water, and instantly feel all the dirt and sweat cleared off. This cleansing water is also great if you’re like me and get a little oily in your T-zone by mid day. A few swipes of a cotton pad, and you will feel like a new woman.

A Lengthening Mascara Goes A Long Way

Put your magic wand to work and lengthen those lashes! By applying some lengthening mascara to your upper lash line and fanning outward, you will make your eyes look bigger, and more awake. I’m loving Lashsensational by Maybelline. This mascara has been my saving grace on many busy days, or mornings after happy hour turned into happy hours (ya feel me??)

Or, if you’re feeling a little extra, try a mascara with blue pigments. The blue pigments will make the whites of your eyes pop, and will make you look more fresh faced and ready to go! I like Dr. Hauschka’s Defining Mascara.

Pressed Powder Perfection

I always keep a pressed powder handy. It’s a quick foolproof way to freshen up your look throughout the day. One of my go-to’s is Revlon’s Color Stay Pressed Powder. This powder comes in several different pigments, so you’re likely to find a shade that compliments your skin tone. I also have found that this powder blends in nicely onto of any foundation I’ve applied in the morning. And, most important to me…Revlon’s Color Stay Pressed Powder is a rockstar at keeping shine away.

When in doubt, HIGHLIGHT it out

A good highlighter is a serious game changer. Adding a little highlight to your brow bone, can make you look more awake and fresh faced. Highlighting is an easy way to achieve a flawless look, while illuminating your skin (doesn’t that just sound, awesome!?). If I’m going for a mid-day pick me up I like to blend a little highlighter on my brow bone, and cheek bones. You can also apply highlighter in the center of your eyelid, inner corner ofyour eyes, and underneath the eye for a serious bright eyed, ready to get sh** done look. I prefer this highlighting stick from Revlon over cream highlighters for my mid-day makeover. The stick is easy to throw in a bag and application is a breeze. With a few swipes you’ll be back in business.

 Last, But Not Least…LIPS

Rounding out this all star line up: a good, moisturizing lip balm…bonus points if there’s a tint of color! ( AND THE CROWD GOES WILD!)

On a serious note, if you haven’t figured it out already, you need some Burt’s Bees in your life. Also, if you haven’t figured it out already…add a little bit of tint to those lips and your badass factor gets kicked up a notch. I love the tinted lip balm from Burt’s Bees. Rose (pictured below) is my gal…but she has many other gorgeous friends for you to choose from.

To refresh I recommend:

  1. Micellar Cleanser – this helps to get dirt away or tone down shine midday. This super gentle cleanser will become your best bud.
  2. Lengthening Mascara – a good mascara will help you look and feel more awake. Opt for a mascara with blue pigments for extra oomph.
  3. Pressed Powder – a good pressed powder in your skin tone will blend easily onto of existing foundation and help tame an oily T-zone.
  4. Highlighter – swiping highlighter on your brow bone, eyelids, or inner eyes can help you look fresh faced, flawless.
  5. Tinted Lip Balm – not only will a good balm help moisturize, the tint will give you a nice little boost in confidence.

I know it might be silly to say makeup can give us confidence or help us face a tough day ahead. Sometimes, as women I think we carry too much on our shoulders, maybe internalize too much or take on too much. In reality, we are too hard on ourselves! You don’t need this makeup to be good at your job, ace that exam, or be a better mom. Truth is, you are already all of that and above because you get up every day and you get it done! If, blue mascara is to you what Iron Man’s armor is to him, then girlfriend I support you!

    1. You should definitely try it! The revlon highlighter I linked in the post is great for a beginner because you have more control over where you’re putting the product since it is in stick form. Even on days where I wear barely any makeup I like to dab a little highlighter under the arches of my eyebrows and cheekbones, it does wonders to make you look awake and refreshed!
